Seasonal Phased Maintenance Management
Golf green turf is the core playing surface of the course; maintaining the smooth, dense, and consistent ball-roll characteristics required for competitive play demands adherence to growth patterns and the implementation of a phased, year-round maintenance program.
In spring, as temperatures rise, the turf begins to green up.
Maintenance focuses on aeration and verticutting (to remove thatch), combined with light topdressing to improve soil permeability. Balanced fertilizers should be applied moderately, alongside preventive fungicide applications to ward off spring diseases and lay a solid foundation for the season’s growth.
Summer brings high heat and humidity, making the turf susceptible to heat stress.
Maintenance prioritizes root health and disease prevention. Mowing heights should be raised slightly, and nitrogen fertilizer application strictly controlled. Irrigation practices must be optimized to avoid prolonged leaf wetness overnight. Promptly removing clippings reduces the risk of dollar spot and brown patch outbreaks, while major disruptive maintenance operations should be minimized.
Autumn’s cooler climate offers a prime window for turf recovery.
Deep aeration and verticutting can be scheduled, paired with topdressing to level out depressions caused by summer foot traffic. Potassium application should be increased to promote robust root growth and cold tolerance, while overseeding can be used to repair sparse areas.

Growth slows in winter; the focus shifts to frost protection and moisture retention, with a reduction in intensive mowing and rolling. Drainage must be managed to prevent freeze damage from standing water, and fallen leaves or debris should be cleared regularly to ensure the turf successfully overwinters.
Standardized maintenance relies on specialized equipment. The proper selection of green-specific reel mowers, aerators, and topdressing machinery ensures consistent maintenance results and upholds the quality of the putting green.
